Oklahoma State University

Placement/Prerequisites

Mathematical knowledge is built on prior understanding. The Department of Mathematics at OSU believes that in order for students to be successful in their mathematics courses, they should take courses commensurate with their understandings.

Beginning in Fall 2012, all new or continuing students at OSU who have not previously taken a college-level mathematics course will be required to take a mathematics placement exam prior to enrollment.  This exam will help to ensure that a student and his or her academic advisor choose a mathematics course most appropriate to the student's level of mathematical understanding and ability.

For information about this program and instructions about taking the placement exam, please see:

Math Quotables

As mathematics is more than calculation, so education in mathematics must be more than mastery of arithmetic. -A Report to the Nation
